Jon Trask sits down at the CMP Conclave in Spokane to chat with Roger Rickard, the Founder of Voices in Advocacy . We talk with him about some of the “how’s” and “why’s” that members of the meetings and events industry should (and can) become advocates. We touch on the recent IRS meeting controversy and why sometimes saying nothing is better than saying something quickly and in the heat of the moment. Roger talks about some of the industry organizations and their efforts to advocate on our behalf.
He also reminds us of the good news from the recent media attention…while they may have criticized aspects of certain events, no one has questioned the need for groups to meet.
Roger’s Seven Advocacy Actions:
1. Believe – you can make a difference
2. Be Informed – read and research
3. Discuss the Issues – spread the word
4. Get on the Record – write, speak out, act
5. Be a Resource -provide experience
6. Volunteer -play a part for the cause
7. Contribute -donate money or time
